Journalists at the Rockford Register Star and Freeport Journal-Standard will decide whether to join the United Media Guild. The National Labor Relations Board will supervise the election, which will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the second floor conference room at the Register Star.
Peoria Journal Star columnist Phil Luciano, chair of the UMG’s Peoria unit, had this message for those preparing to vote:
As a unit that has sought justice for more than a half-century, Peoria Unit 86 of the United Media Guild well understands and appreciates the challenges you have been facing. The struggle for fairness never ends in the workplace, but membership in the United Media Guild means that you always have the best support and resources available amid the chaotic whirl of an increasingly fickle and difficult modern newspaper industry.
Guild membership means you are never alone. And, regardless of a particular situation, we always fight for one core value: justice.
After all, that’s what newspapering is all about: justice — a fair shake for the average Joe and Jane.
We in Peoria applaud you for your hard work. We look forward to your joining our ranks in the never-ending push for fairness.
